This year we’ll be cooking an ambitious 10,000 hot meals for our fellow New Yorkers in an early Thanksgiving special event.
This is our second Thanksgiving Special – last year we distributed 3,800 delicious meals and desserts around the city, together with our partner organizations. Check out our video from our 2020 cookathon:
This year we’ll be running an elaborate 3-day cookathon. We’ll be partnering with 40 organizations, and setting up stations around the city so that those who need it the most can share in our chef made meals. Our chefs will be cooking both traditional Thanksgiving meals, as well as showcasing some of their own creations from their respective cultures too.
Why We Make Our Thanksgiving Early
We’ll be running our cookathon at our HQ @6th Street Community Center in the East Village from Sat 23rd to Mon 25 October. This is our second year of early Thanksgiving, and for a very good reason. Thanksgiving is the one time that there are lots of organizations providing food for people in NYC. But with an estimated 1.7 million food insecure in the city, the period running up to Thanksgiving is a time when people need food the most. Winter is coming and we want to share the love with people as the seasons change.
Why This Year's Session is Such a Vital One
Thanksgiving is about being thankful for what we have but also about sharing with others. It’s fair to say that most of us have had a pretty tough couple of years in NYC, and even if we’ve had enough to eat in that time, it’s still been pretty intense. For those who are food insecure and vulnerable, it’s been an incredibly difficult time too, so now, more than ever, it’s vital that we share the love with our fellow New Yorkers.
Who We Are and Why We're Doing This
We started our organization in the first few weeks of the pandemic when we learned that—due to restaurant closures and the chaos of Covid—there was a distinct shortage of cooked food in the city. We’re a bunch of friends with big hearts, we’re all volunteers, and we have a mission to end food insecurity in our city.
Since then, we’ve formed our organization into a full 501(3)(c) non-profit. We have 6 volunteer chefs on our team who cook nutritious and healthy meals from a cross-section of cultures. We’re also efficient and effective, meaning we can make a healthy meal for around 80 cents, and so far we’ve cooked a staggering 140,000 meals for our fellow New Yorkers. Our kitchen is a place of love where everyone is welcome, and we spread that love across the city with the food that we make. (And if you are an organization such as a church, mosque, religious center, community center, mutual aid, etc. you can contact us for delivery of free food for your community too.)
How You Can Help
Any donation that you make will go directly to feeding the people who have been hardest hit in these times. We have minimal overheads and all our team are volunteers, so everything you spend will go directly into sharing some early Thanksgiving love with the people that we feed. And because we are so efficient, for every $10 you donate, we can make 12 meals! We’ll also update you after the event, so you can see the impact your donation has made. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
