What we’re reading, 3/25/2024

Spring has arrived in the form of buds on trees and bright blue skies but the nighttime temperatures have been below freezing. I guess we still have a ways to go in NYC before we can put away coats and hats.

This time of year, when the natural world seems to hesitate on the brink of change, feels kind of exciting, doesn’t it? Like change is possible everywhere?

Here’s what we’ve been reading lately:

While Mayor Adams continues to promote the lie that the influx of migrants is an untenable burden on NYC, the global investment bank Goldman Sachs named increased immigration (and the influx of new workers into the workforce) as the reason it is boosting its GDP forecast for the U.S.

Paris is crediting its investment in public housing with maintaining its reputation for excellence: “Our guiding philosophy is that those who produce the riches of the city must have the right to live in it … teachers, sanitation workers, nurses, college students, bakers and butchers.”

But here in NYC? We may be building more affordable housing, but we’re keeping it out of the hands of the people who need help the most.
